CFA 2 - Under what circumstances, if any, do we have a moral duty to share what we know?
Key terms:
Moral Duty - Moral duty is the responsibility one has to themselves and others and society. Duty refers to the way in which one's morals guides one's actions. Here, it refers to the morals and values we have that guide the way we share knowledge and if we do.
Circumstances - different situations call for different decisions because the consequences of different things in each situation is different, so the logic and values we apply to one situation differs from another.
KC: In situations where the lives and wellbeing of people are at hand, the sharing of knowledge is guided by principles, values, and predicted consequences to save as many people as possible and power is exerted to respond to the situation at hand.
TOK Concepts:
Values - every person has their own moral values and hence feels a different responsibility to society and to themselves.
Power - when someone has knowledge of something that could either save someone else's life, then that gives one power to decide the situation and the outcome of that situation. power is the influence you have over something. having knowledge is power.
Causation: when someone has knowledge of something, that decieds whether or not someone else lives, then they are obligated by morals and by society to share that knowledge and save lives.
Objects:
Enigma Machine - this machine gave the war effort knowledge that could deiced the lives of the people on the boats, but they had to choose between sacrificing the entire war effort by sharing the knowledge or hiding such crucial knowledge and killing some people to win the war.
The Altius 600 - It's this knowledge and the data collected from the hurricane hunters that helped millions of Floridians in their decision to evacuate, possibly saving lives. "By having these observations that we would otherwise not have, we can tell forecasters and the emergency managers that make these life-or-death decisions, evacuating or not, if the storm is as strong or weaker than you think," Cione said. How a 25-pound hurricane-hunting drone can help inform "life-or-death decisions"
CPR Poster - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that can help save a person's life if their breathing or heart stops. in a situation where one requires cpr, said poster would give someone knowledge of cpr and help guide the decision of life and death and power of choosing life or deathWhy we use CPR%20is%20an,including%20the%20brain%20and%20lungs.)CPR poster

RWC: the machine helps with hurricane detection and thus prevention. With modern technology, the object helps people in power deal with hurricanes in places that are hurricane-prone.
Pros:
- life, safety and health of millions of people is at hand.
- the sharing of knowledge obtained from the machine has the potential and power to save lives, but the decision is quite clear and is not heavily guided by principles, but is guided by social duty and moral duty.
- using the knowledge from the machine, they authorities will try to save as many people as possible.
- in this circumstance, majority of people would feel a moral duty to share what they know to save lives.
Cons:
- the sharing of knowledge obtained from the machine has the potential and power to save lives, but the decision is quite clear and is not heavily guided by principles, but is guided by social duty and moral duty.
-
Enigma Machine - this machine gave the war effort knowledge that could deiced the lives of the people on the boats, but they had to choose between sacrificing the entire war effort by sharing the knowledge or hiding such crucial knowledge and killing some people to win the war.
RWC: the machine helped with the war effort (ww2) and helped win the war. If it wasn't for this machine, the war wouldn't have been won. It gives the power to those interpreting the machine to affect the way the war is waged. It forces the interpreter to, using their morals, decide who will die and not die, and whether to put the individual above war overall.
-
Cons:
- in this circumstance, it is unclear what the interpreter will do depending on their morals and priorities, they will act differently even though the circumstance is the same for any interpreter in this position. (everyone feels a different moral duty)
- the interpreter is not looking to save as many people as possible, they are looking to see what it will cost to save the war effort and help in the war effort. they choose between people dying now or people dying later and the whole country suffering.
Pros:
- the way in which the interpreter uses the knowledge from the machine is entirely guided by their own principles, values, and predicted consequences to make and informed decision.
- the person is trying to save as many people as possible.
CPR Poster - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that can help save a person's life if their breathing or heart stops. in a situation where one requires cpr, said poster would give someone knowledge of cpr and help guide the decision of life and death and power of choosing life or death
-
RWC: this poster is used by the general public to perform CPR on people that require it in order to save their lives. CPR has been practiced for a little while and is commonly used and anyone can perform it.
Pros:
- the wellbeing and life is at hand and there is a decision that will be made that will affect that life.
- power is exerted when CPR is performed using the poster and knowledge from the poster.
Cons:
- only one person's life is at hand, and there isn't a decision to share information that could either save one persons life or multiple people's lives.
- has no real significance, and provides knowledge can be found elsewhere and that most people already have.
