Dimensions of Articulation
Voicing
The airstream from the lungs passes through an opening between the vocal cords
Voiceless
If the vocal cords are apart of the airstream is not obstructed at the glottis, the sounds are voiceless.
Voiced
If the vocal cords are together and the airstream forces its way through, the vocal cords vibrate and produce voiced sounds.
Orall
When the velum is raised to block the passage of airstream through the nose and forced through the mouth, this produces oral sounds.
Nasal
If you force the air out of the nose and block the oral passage, sounds produced this way are called nasal.
Places of articulation
Labials
Bilabials
[b], [p], [m] - we articulate them by bringing both lips together.
Labiodentals
[f], [v] - we articulate by touching the bottom lip to the upper teeth.
Alvelors
[t], [d], [s], [z], [n] and [l] - We produce these sounds with the tip of our tongue toward the hard palate, and touch the alveolar ridge.
Velars
[k], [g], [ŋ] and [w] - we produce these sounds raising the back of the tongue toward the soft palate.
Interdentals
[θ] and [ð] - when we produce these sounds we insert the tip of the tongue between the upper and the lower teeth.
Palatals
[ʃ], [ʒ], [ʈʃ] and [dʒ] - when we produce these sounds we raise the front part of the tongue to a point in the hard palate just behind the alveolar ridge.
Manner of Articulation
Obstruents
Consonant sound formed by obstructing the outward airflow.
Stops
When the air is completely stopped for a brief period of time, these speech sounds are called stops.
Fricatives
When the air is stopped but is obstructed from flowing freely.
Affricates
Sounds produced by a stop closure followed inmediately a slow release of the closure.
Sonorants
Nasals
They are produced by allowing air to escape through the nose and using the mouth cavity as a resonance area.
Liquids
There is some obstruction of the airstream but not enough to cause friction.
Articulations in which there is only a partial closure of an unimpeded oral or nasal scape of air.
Glides
When there is little or no obstruction of the airstream in the mouth.
