Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are usually given at the end of a unit and are worth a grade. They still cover the same material.

Formative
Definition: Formative assessments gather evidence of student learning to inform teachers of their progress. Once the teacher reviews student's scores they may provide feedback or adjust instruction. It is a continuous process in designing instruction.
Examples:

A very informal way to provide formative assessment is by simply observing students while they read or think.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: These are assessments taken at different specific points in the year to track student's progress and see if they are on track with their expected level.
Examples:

Another example is the district assessment that students take every 9 weeks in Lubbock ISD to track development and make sure students are on the targeted level.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is not like a regular test where students are asked multiple choice/short answer questions. Instead the students are asked to complete a task and are graded based on their performance or ability to complete the task.
Examples:
One example could be a reader's theatre where the teacher observes the fluency of different students.
Another example could be some form of project like the students building a structure to show their mathmatical/science knowledge.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are pre-assessments that identify a students strengths/weaknesses and even misconceptions. These tests are mostly used to direct instructions and some can be used to form leveled groups such as reading groups.
Examples:
One example is a running record which tell's you the students reading level, and if paired with comprehension questions even more information is given about the student.
Another example is the primary spelling inventory which shows a students ability to spell words that include short/long vowels, digraphs and blends, inflectional endings and more.
