Formative
Definition: A way for teachers to asses students and adjust instruction as needed. These are typically used to guide instruction, rather than used as a grade.
Exit Ticket- Students complete a short activity to reflect on the lesson before leaving the class or moving on to the next subject.
Collaborate Board- Students would write something that they learned or found interesting about the lesson on a collaborative board.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Used to compare to a specific set of standards. It is used to determine if students are on the right track in their learning.
STAAR- This is an end-of-year assessment that shows if students are where they should be at the end of the grade level.
MAP Test- This is an assessment that is taken at the beginning, middle, and end of the year to see if students are on track, and where they stand compared to other students in the grade across the state.
Summative
Definition: Used to check student progression at the end of a unit. It is a way for teachers to check what students have learned at the end. The key word here is "end."
Project- Students create a diagram, chart, or model to show what they have learned in a unit or lesson.
Unit Assessment- Students take an exam over everything they covered in a specific unit. It is a longer assessment because it has more content to cover.
Performance
Definition: This requires that students have to demonstrate what they know. It goes beyond the typical questions and assessments that take place on a normal day.
Short Constructed Response- Students will answer a question with a short response. They will have to provide proof in their answer to really demonstrate what they know.

Diagnostic
Definition: Used to gain knowledge about individual students. It is a way for the teacher to individualize instruction for students.
Journal Entry- These can be used to see what students know and can do based on their journal entries. It also allows for the teacher to learn about student interests and home life.
Mind Map- Students show their ideas and what they know on a map or chart template. It shows the teacher what they know and think.
