Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are given as a pre-assessment before a unit or modules to see where students are at, what their prior knowledge is and areas of weaknesses.
Surveys: These can be used the same way as a quiz but there is not grade penalty. They can also be the same information as a KWL chart just in a different format.
Discussions: This can be whole group, small group or one on one, but the teacher is able to gauge where the students are at prior to a lesson, module or unit.
Performance
Definition: Performance based assessments are when students are required to perform a task instead of taking a written assessment.
One-Minute Speech: Give a one minute speech about a topic or skills given by the teacher. This quickly assesses students knowledge and their oral communication.
Create a Concept Map: Students can create their own concept map of all the information provided during the lesson. This allows the teacher to see if there are any misunderstandings or gaps.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are low stakes assessments that provide the teacher and the student with information on growth or progress throughout a lesson. The information received from formative assessments are used to change instruction if needed.
Journal Entry: Journal entries are a great way for the students to put down on paper what they are learning or any questions or confusion they might have. it also helps students with their writing skills. This can be beneficial for students who tend to not ask for help, the teacher can see where they are at.
Concept Maps: Concept maps can be filled out the entirety of a lesson but they can also be looked at during lessons to see if students are understanding or if they need to reteach.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit or module to measure students understanding. These assessments are high takes, meaning they have a high grade value to them.
Essays: Essays are a way for students to put pen to paper to talk about what they know or learned. The teacher will give a topic relating to the unit and student's have to responding using information they learned during that unit.
Project presentations: Having students use their knowledge they gained to create a project or presentation is very effective to see students understanding. These projects are more fun than a multiple choice test for students.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments monitor students progress and see where they are at . These assessments tell a teacher if their students are on track for end of year assessments.
STAAR Benchmark: The STAAR test is taken at the end of the year but the benchmark is taken in the middle of the year with an old STAAR test to see if students are on track. These results can given intervention lessons to teachers.
MAP: MAP testing is done beginning of year, middle of year and end of year. This is an assessment to monitor student progress and make sure they are headed in the right direction throughout the whole year. RTI information is receives from this test.
