Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are on-going assessments given in a classroom that are used to let the teacher know where the student is in their learning. It usually occurs during the “real time” part of teaching and are seen as check ups on the students for the teacher.
Examples of formative assessments could be a quick turn and talk, homework, pretests, or the teacher verbally asking questions.
Interm/Benchmark
Interm/Benchmark assessments are used to track students progress and see with a formal assessment where they are in their learning and if they are on track for future learning.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are usually used as pre-assessments in order to understand what the student knows and what the teachers need to focus on and elaborate more in their instruction. This can also allow the students misconceptions come to light.
An example of a diagnostic assessment could be a pretest, to see what the student knows already and what they struggle in. Another example could be a KWL chart, where students write what they know, what they would like to know, and then later what they learn.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment where the students is asked to demonstrate or perform what they know instead of them writing what they know or answering questions.
Examples of a performance assessment could be retelling a story by acting it out or participating in a debate on a topic they have been leaning about.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are the use of a formal measure to confirm and recognize student learning accomplishment. Summative assessments are used at the end of a unit or the end of a six weeks or even the end of the year.
