Formative
Definition: The process of gathering and monitoring student learning that occurs throughout the course or unit. These assessments can be used to adjust instruction and provide feedback.
Exit Slip: Written student responses to questions teachers ask at the end of class which allows teachers to quickly assess if students are understanding the material.
Quiz: A test of knowledge given to students that are used to assess what a student knows and provide evidence of student learning.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments occur at the end of a unit or chunk of learning to evaluate student knowledge or skill proficiency.
Final Projects: An assignment given at the end of a course that covers all or most things learned in that course.
Exam: A test that is given at the end of a unit to evaluate if students have adequately learned the material covered in that period.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as pre-assessments to determine what a student knows about a given subject and help teachers to see students' strengths and weaknesses to transform their instruction to address their needs.
Pre-Test: Non-graded assessment types that are used to determine a student's pre-existing knowledge on a given matter.
Self-Assessments: An evaluation of one's existing knowledge that can provide teachers with feedback on students' strengths and weaknesses to adjust instruction.
Performance:
Definition: Performance assessments require students to directly show what they know and are able to do through open-ended tasks.
Presentation Report: Requires students to offer information about a given subject to a person or group people to showcase their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Student Portfolio: A collection of student work that offers evidence and valuable data on student improvement and skill mastery.
