MEDICARE
Who are
eligible
for Medicare: Australian Citizens/ Permanent residents over the age of 16, visitors from countries with a
reciprocal agreement
(e.g. New Zealand, Norway, Sweden)
How is Medicare funded?
There are 3 ways Medicare are funded. 1.
Medicare levy
- 2% of taxable income fo tax payers in Australia. 2.
Medicare Levy Surcharge
--> additional 1 - 1.5% of taxable income for earners of higher income, who do not have PHI. 3.
General taxation
revenue --> Income collected from general taxes paid via our earnings, via GST etc.
Service covered by Medicare:
: Eye tests, Blood tests, x - rays, most general doctor consultations
Services NOT covered by Medicare
Ambulance services, acupuncture, chiropractor services
What is Medicare:
Medicare is a universal health insurance scheme subsidised by the Australian Government
ADV OF MEDICARE --> 1. Countries with a reciprocal agreement can have access to Medicare,
Private Health insurance (PHI)
What is PHI?
Individuals pay a premium/ fee to a PHI provider/ company in return for access to health care services generally not covered by Medicare
How does PHI work?
You have 3 options you can choose from. 1. Private hospital cover 2. Extras cover 3. Combined Cover
PHI Incentives
1. Lifetime Health cover 2. Medicare Levy Surcharge 3. PHI rebate
LIFETIME HEALTH COVER - High income earners must pay an extra 2% on top of their premium if they do not have PHI by the age of 31.

Pharmaceutical benefits scheme provides individuals with essential medication regardless of their ability to pay.

There are over 4000 brands of prescribed medicines covered by PBS.
