Destiny 2 :
Motivation
A player's individual motivation to play a game varies, and is unique to every player.
The motivation behind playing Destiny ranges from progressing in the game, to appreciating the all of the arts throughout the game.
For many, playing video games is a form of escaping everyday reality. By this, the individual expels themselves from reality and puts themselves inside the video game.
Meaningful Choices
It is important to make choices that matter long-term, and short-term in order to create the most value out of your choices.
In the beginning of the game, you are given the choice between 3 unique different characters/classes. Choosing one will determine how you play the game and determine the mechanics which the player will learn and use. This choice is important because it cannot be reversed, and it's important for the player to make the right choice as it is a long-term decision.
Making tactical decisions within a game is extremely important. This includes timing, teamwork, survivability, cognitive awareness - all of these, and many more, are important when it comes to making tactfully intelligent decisions which will ultimately reward the player/s short-term.
Many of the long-term choices the player makes in Destiny are ambiguous, as the outcomes are not specifically known, are designed in a manner to only be revealed days or weeks in advance throughout playing the game. Bungie intended this because the intention is for players to make a calculated decision, while also still leaving the player unanswered.
Balance
The balance of a game is determined by how equal different elements of a game are made and how they (are able to) interact together
Players of a game will always be searching for ways to exploit video games. This is also true in Destiny; players look for bugs in certain abilities, and how certain combinations of perks and abilities can be amplified. These sort of "bugs" often make the game unfair when it comes to multiplayer.
The general core mechanics within Destiny are well-balanced - allowing for each class to have their unique abilities, with equal potential opportunity to grow their character.
Destiny is not a pay-to-win game, meaning that players cannot just go buy the best guns in the game and expect to finish the game any quicker. This is prevented by making all weapons only obtainable through specific missions. The weapons drop according to RNG, so the chances of each playing receiving a specific item is equal for all players.
Usability
Usability refers to players understanding different outcomes of the game, and how easy in general it is to understand the game and what happens within it
Bungie did a good job at allowing players to know where they're supposed to go within the game by implementing pathfinding, hinting at which direction the player should go towards
Further into the game when mechanics and difficulty of the game gets more intense, players are forced to figure EXTREMELY difficult mechanics on their own. Bungie intentionally does this and it builds up to the anticipation of players being "world's-first" in completing missions known as "raids" which take more than 8 hours when the mechanics are not known to players
When it comes to the UX of Destiny, everything is user-friendly, unambiguous and logical. There aren't many menu-screens which take away complexity. All missions are based on a planet, which are easy to identify using previous knowledge (knowing what the planets in our solar system look like), and are all marked when needed to go to the necessary planet for a mission
Aesthetics
The aesthetics refer to the design of the game; the art, music, the flow, personalities of characters and many more
-
The characters within Destiny are all well-designed. Their personalities and the chemistry of personalities blend well when it comes to their dialogue.
What makes the aesthetic of Destiny even more appealing (to some) is the lore of the game. The lore goes deeper than anything the in-game lore sheds light on. Everything within the lore is well-written and allows players to understand the world of Destiny even more. It's important to know that the lore only adds to the knowledge of the world, and that players still know and understand the story of Destiny only by playing the game - the lore is just extra content which emphasises and highlights Bungie's extreme detail to aesthetic
The music is Destiny is unmatched. A large portion of it being classical and produced by an orchestra - it's truly magical listening to all the musical art created for the game.
