Formative
Definition: The process of gathering information and evidence from student learning to get feedback and guide instruction.
Giving students an exit ticket asking 3 questions over the lesson for the day. (Formal formative assessment)

Think-pair-share about something students learned in the class that day. Teacher is walking around and listening to student responses. (Informal formative assessment
Summative
Definition:
Assessment at the end of a large chunk of time that gives the teacher formal feedback that has a grading criteria.
Students will write an essay over a predetermined topic that they learned about in a unit. The teacher has a rubric and set criteria for grading the end of term paper.
The teacher gives a science unit assessment at the end of the 9 week grading period to assess students formally through a variety of multiple choice questions, true false questions, and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Diagnostic
Definition: Assessments to show teachers what students are and are not able to do to inform teachers on how, when, and why to adjust their instruction.
In the middle of a lesson, a teacher can administer a pop quiz that asks students questions about the topic. This will show the teacher where students are at in the immediate moment and determine how she will adjust her instruction.

Before starting a unit on fractions, a teacher gives students a pre-assessment to determine what students already know and what students need to be taught. This will guide her instruction and determine misconceptions before the unit has even begun.
Performance
Definition: An open ended assessment where students are asked to create or demonstrate what they have learned throughout the unit or certain period of time.
Students create a project where they choose a historical figure, gather information about what person, and put the information on a trifold board to present about their historical figure.
