mednick: adoption study
procedure- Denmark 14,427
results- xB xA- 13.5% , ^B ^A- 24.5%.
conclusion- biological predispositions were more impactful than their environment in terms of criminal convictions. nature more significant to criminal convictions than nurture
aim- to investigate if there is a correlation between biological predispositions in adopted sons and criminal convictions = role of genetic factors in criminal behaviour
excluded if: a minor (under15), no record of place/ date of birth, unknown bio father, adopted by single woman

raine: classic study
results and findings: cortical regions- murderers had sig less glucose metabolism than controls in medial prefrontal areas. subcortical regions- murderers had lower glucose metabolism in the corpus callosum, amygdala, medial temporal lobe, hippocampus
aim- to use PET scans to investigate if there are any brain impairments in the subcortical and cortical regions in murderers who have pledged NGRI.
conclusion- hypothesis was supported. murderers pleading NGRI have different activity from people who are not violent offenders
procedure- 39 men and 2 women. injected with a radioactive tracer, 2 weeks medication free beforehand, did a 32 min continuous performance task then PET scan conducted immediately after. California, USA. murderers matched on age, ethnicity and gender.
evaluation of raine
-
-
- low internal validity with the PET scans- everyone has a different line from outer corner of eye to ear- could affect what brain areas displayed
- high internal validity- all confounding variables controlled- pp matched across experimental and control groups
evaluation of mednick
-
- based on convictions- lots of criminal behaviour may not be convicted, lack of internal validity
+large sample, rep and therefore gen
