Ideas and topics I will discuss in my essay - plan of action
case studies
again relevance is very important
lots of writing/ evaluation for something that the majority of which may not be directly linked to my original question.
be careful to link directly and only talk about what is relevant to my topic of study.
don't want to use lots of my word count on a singular case study
blair witch project
the effects that the film had on audiences around the world
specifically how the film manipulated people into believing real people were dead or in danger
is that too far by playing on peoples genuine emotions? ethically and politically correct?
advice from the centre coordinator
following research on imdb I discovered different films have different age ratings in different countries because certain content is cut out, so could watch cut versions of crucial films so that they’re age appropriate.
if some versions are unavailable I will need to consider other options as a back up.
I’d perhaps like to move across into talking about the psychological damage left on actors and actresses.
relevance is a big concern here, I don't want to go off on a tangent
lots of examples, linking to Blair Witch again, The Shining, The Exorcist etc.
might not be relevant
will only mention if it is a direct asset to the point I'm talking about
possible points of discussion
martyrism
hedonism
sadism
other points to mention
camera techniques
handheld camera
adds to a sense of being real
induces motion sickness
set up camera
also feels more realistic
sound and lighting techniques
flashing lights/ strobe lights
strobe lights interfere with brain, makes people feel unwell and dream-like
subliminal sounds
vibrations and tones played in the background of some films, increasing heart rate, giving headaches, making audiences feel sick - need to find clear examples
"infrasound"
realistic sounds
sound effects, especially gory ones, make audiences feel unwell due to witnessing something happening to someone else and experiencing a similar sensation - enhanced by sound
life-like sound effects induce synthesia
"sympathy pain"
manipulation techniques
believing the things being seen are real
discression not provided
rise in found footage films: why?
real emotions being toyed with
genuine fear over simulated fear
empathy is a factor being uitilised
active spectatorship
