        India receives the highest number of tourists, including medical tourists, from Bangladesh, he told the media.

        LATEST -In 2024, India-Bangladesh relations have experienced several notable developments and changes:
        
        Political Shifts: The political landscape in Bangladesh has shifted significantly with the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The new interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has lifted the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party
        
        Border Tensions: There have been increased tensions along the India-Bangladesh border. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has taken a firmer stance, leading to several confrontations with the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) over issues like barbed wire fencing and dam construction
        
        Economic and Trade Relations: Despite political changes, economic ties remain strong. India continues to be Bangladesh’s largest trade partner in South Asia, with significant cooperation in infrastructure, power, and energy sectors
        
        Geopolitical Dynamics: China’s influence in Bangladesh is growing, with Beijing engaging more actively with the new political players. This has created a competitive environment for India, which has traditionally had strong ties with Bangladesh under Hasina’s leadership
        
        High-Level Interactions: There have been several high-level interactions between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi and Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud have participated in virtual summits and inaugurated the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline
      - As an important youth connect initiative, in June 2022, India launched a revamped version of the Bangladesh Youth Delegation 2022 campaign to attract the best of Bangladeshi talent, from various disciplines, to visit India as part of the delegation, for which auditions have
        been conducted in major cities of Dhaka, Chattogram and Rajshahi.
      - The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre and the Indian Cultural Centre in Dhaka both play an important role in celebration of common cultural links between the two countries.
      - Academic Chairs, viz. Hindi Chair in Dhaka University and Unani Chair in Hamdard University have got
        functional since March 2022.
      - During PM Modi’s visit in March 2021, both Prime Ministers inaugurated Bangabandhu-Bapu Digital Exhibition in Both sides released respective commemorative postage stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of India-Bangladesh friendship during the same visit
      - Bangladesh welcomed the decision of
        Government of India to establish the Bangabandhu Chair at University of Delhi and Amb Shahidul Haque (Retd), ex-Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, is its first occupant.
      - An important ITEC partner country, Bangladesh annually sees around 800 participants availing benefits of the ITEC training courses.
      - In March 2021, India announced
        1000 “Suborno Jayanti Scholarships” for Bangladeshi students and in February 2022, a dedicated website was launched for desirous Bangladeshi students wanting to study in premier Govt of India educational institutes, including the IITs and NIITs, and pursue under graduation, post-graduation and M.Phil/PhD courses
      - High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) constitute an active pillar of
        India’s development assistance.
  - - - Maitree project: The US $2 billion worth project is being built under a concessional financing scheme offered by India to Bangladesh. The first unit of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Production in Bangladesh’s Khulna province is already supplying 660 MW to the country’s national grid.
      - Power import: Bangladesh is also awaiting power from the Adani Group’s 1600 Megawatt thermal power station at Godda in Jharkhand. Talks are currently underway to import at least 600 MW of power from this plant to meet Bangladesh’s peak summer demand.
      - BIFPCL: The two countries set up the Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between India’s National Thermal Power Corporation and Bangladesh Power Development Board. Once completed, this will be Bangladesh’s largest power plant.
