in the meantime, Bassanio chooses the right lead basket, during a game organised by Portia's father. jessice, elopes with Lorenzo.
Bassanio asks Antonio money to woo lady Portia. Antonio doesn't have it, so he asks to Shylock.

Antonio can't pay back Shylock, and goes to prison. shylock meets 2 lawyers who tell him that if Antonio lose one drop of blood Shylock would be punished becose he hurt a venetian.

there is a monlogue at the end of the scene which is one of the most famous. in the monologue the are many repetitions to emphasize
this part is powerful, because Shylock shows his feelings
a dialogue between Solanio, Salerio and later Shylock about Antonio's ships, the prejudice of the citizens of Venice and the non difference between Jew and Christian in an abstract world.

portia --> looking for an husband, she has many pretenders, and she is very rich.
Bassanio --> Antonio's friend, marries Portia initially for a debt.
Antonio --> merchant class, generous man. depressed because the ships don't arrive.
jessica --> Shylock's daugther, she is in love with Lorenzo.
shylock --> is Jew, written with prejudice but new elements. both positive (compassion for him) and negative (he doesn't have mercy) elements.
