The Multi-store Model of Memory - Richard Atkinson & Richard Shiffins (1968,1971)
Types of memory
Short term (STM) - Memory for events in the present or immediate past, memory of things for a short period of time. Encoding - acoustic (sound).
Long term (LTM) - Holds a vast quantity of information which can be stored for long periods of time. Contains all your personal memories, general knowledge, and beliefs about the world. Memories last anywhere from 30 seconds to forever. Encoding - semantic (has meaning)
Sensory memory - Has memory stores for each of our senses, it registers our environment and is the beginning of the process of memory.

Sequence
-
Real-life observations - You can multitask, using STM and LTM at the same time.
Logic et al - STM and LTM work together, STM does not necessarily come before LTM.
Separate stores
-
-
Dual Task Technique Baddeley & Hitch (1976) - There are two different types of STM therefore different STM stores (verbal & visual)
Warrington et al - STM is in different stores as KF had difficulty dealing with verbal information but not visual processing.
