1 THE MOST POWERFUL MONARCHIES
15th and 16th centuries Authoritarian monarchies evolved -> feudal monarchies.
THE TREASURY AND THE ARMY
Monarchs involved in wars with kings, created -> permanent royal armies.
They didn't depend -> nobility, church and cities. Results -> Less conflicts and more stability.
Royal treasuries -> collect money to mantain administrative and military siystems.
Increased financial resources -> taxes and loans.
THE ROYAL COURT AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF KINGDOMS
Administrative structure of kingdoms became complex -> growing tax and military resources
This development considered -> origin of the modern state.
Nobility, church and cities rebell against the monarch, he tried to control by -> giving jobs in royal court or army, or by agreements.
Royal treasuries powerfull -> monarch needed less money from: regional courts and parliaments.
Monarch took part in appointing important Church figures.
Monarch increased control in municipal goverments.

THE LIMITATIONS OF AUTHORITARIAN MONARCHIES
Monarch weren't able to impose their laws.
They needed -> nobility, church, urban middle class and regional courts. To maintain -> power and stability in their kingdoms
2 THE 15TH AND 16TH CENTURIES
ECONOMY
Beggining Modern Age, Europe economy -> rural economy (agriculture and livestock farming).
But from the 15th century -> craftwork and trade became important
Markets -> lands and goods were bought and sold. Profit was -> objective.
Authorities imposed restrictions -> economic activity, creating monopolies and awarding privileges.
MONOPOLIES AND PRIVILEGES
Certain economic activities -> prohibited.
Important geographical discoveries led -> new monopolies.
Artisans guilds were privilaged (special rights in the production of crafts).
2 THE 15TH AND 16TH CENTURIES
SOCIETY
At the beginning of Modern age, society -> hierarchical, 2 privilaged classes: nobility and clergy.
The clergy
DIfferent levels (rich bishops-modest rural priests).
The third state
Largest segment, changed many things because of the economic changes and reinforced social wealth.
The nobility
Were rich and wealth, lost power but compensated by-> joining the army and royal court.
