Class Disscusion
Why does this make people uncomfortable?
- to acknowledge whiteness and white privileges' is to understand"
- that meritocracy is a myth
- that success is not attained based on ones talent or abilities alone
there are opportunities and advantages that are only available to certain people
How do we question what these systems look like? - there is a common misperception that when we are talking about whiteness people think that they are only referring to white people specifically.
- how did the singular notion of whiteness become a method of hate?
There are systems in place that perpetuate racial inequalities and disparities whiteness helps keep that idea afloat. i.e. the "American Dream". if you don't succeed here then it is your fault because you're lazy.
People also say that the American Dream works are also people that had to lose everything in order to have what they have. An example of student loan forgiveness was brought up in class as its easy for the older generation was able to work a job and be a full-time student then be able to buy a house when they were 30 and able to pay off loans all at the same time but now that is not possible for the generation currently in school. The idea of whiteness comes in where its I've worked hard I've worked hard so you need to work harder to.

when you arent able to succeed at the american dream it is easy to look at a gorup of people who are not
it is easy to look at them and see that millions of them have simply just made the wrong choices, but when you look at this under the lense of whiteness, and entire group of people werent able to participate in the american dream now they are already set to a dissadvantage from years of racism.
What I think:
Why is perfectionism imbedded in a system of whiteness? -The need and want to be perfect stems from people being on time and urgency when it looks like "you cant show up on time" well then you cant be trusted because you don't have good time management. There is also a negative connotation associated with being an essential worker. we use other people we feel like we are entitled to their time. If you aren't available to help clients 24/7 then they will go somewhere else as you are seen as the bad choice. If you're not timely or available then you aren't working hard enough, if your not working hard enough your not serving others in your society, if you're not doing that then you're not supporting the agenda of whiteness.
