Reproduction in Viruses
Infection caused by either injection, or by entering the host cell.
-
-
Lytic Cycle
The virus injects its DNA into the host cell, and then the host starts making copies of the viral DNA and proteins.
In multicellular species, lytic viruses burst from the host cell and infect neighbouring cells.
Lysogenic Cycle
The virus injects its DNA into the host cells, which becomes part of the host cells DNA, now referred to as a provirus.
Can lie dormant within the host until a trigger reactivates it, causing it to enter the lytic state.
Characteristics
-
They are not made up of cells, thus they lack organelles, cytoplasm, and cell membranes.

-
Host Specificity
Viruses are selective, and may be limited to a particular plant, an animal, or even a type of cell.
