Imperialism
Last third of the 19th century
coinciding with the second Industrial Revolution
European important states expanded by colonising territories all over the world
Main of this expansion was to subject other peoples to imperial state
Causes of imperialism
Intense population growth
Europe led to overseas growth
Rivalry between industrialised countries
competed for supplies of raw material, to secure trade routes and to obtain political prestige
Ideological and cultural factors
Europe wanted to ``civilise´´ the rest of the world
also they wanted to introduce their religion and to explore the geography of the new territories
Industrial development
required new raw materials, and new consumer markets all over the world
Consequences of Imperialism
Colonisation involved violence, leading to atrocities like the genocide in the Belgian Congo
Colonisation severely altered the social structure of the indigenous population
New social order based on racial discrimination
Colonisation opened the doors to certain advances in industrialised countries
such as medicine, law and administration
Due to racial discrimination not everybody enjoyed these benefits
Colonial expansion consolidated inequalities
The colonies specialised in producing cheap raw material
They divided territories for the interest of the occupying powers
Artificial borders were created, dividing tribes and ethnic groups

Mother country only controlled economy
Dominions
Territories of the British occupied by a new population of European origin
Colonies
Territories where weak local power allowed mother countries to control all aspects of the country

Imperialism led to development of colonialism
System in which the mother country exploited the colonies according to its interest
The way in which European empires expanded, depended on the circumstances of each colonised territories
Inland Africa was almost completely unexplored
Almost all of its countries were independent

To decide how Africa would be divided amongst European powers
Germany feared that for being late he wouldn't had colonial expansion

Indian Peninsula colonised by the British
France took control of Indochina and Great Britain of Malaysia
China felt the effects of imperialism pressures from Europe and USA
It had to cede control of its mines and allow areas of importance for foreign trade
Its also opened ports for international trade
British took advantage and smuggled the drug to make larges amount of money
Chinese rebelled against this in the First Opium War
