        intelligence collection- Activities to gather information about terrorist organizations and their operations and potential attacks. Intelligence collection may be obtained through a variety of means including:
        
        SIGINT – Interception and interpretation of electronic signal communications such as phone conversations and e-mails.
        
        IMINT – Geospatial imagery collected by satellites and aircraft.
        
        OPINT – Open-source intelligence is acquired through publicly available materials including academic research, newspaper articles, library books, etc.
        
        MASINT – Measurement and signature intelligence looks for the characteristics of certain types of actions and evidence (e.g. the presence of nuclear material when one is trying to develop, smuggle, or use a nuclear weapon or dirty bomb).
        
        HUMINT – Intelligence collected by people from people (and can be done overtly or covertly).

        the book says that the partiot act is still entact but it s is NOT the freedom act of 2019 passed in 2015. in 2020 the efforts to edtend the provisions were not passed by the house of represenatives and as such the law expired.
