Cuban missile crisis

After plans failed to overthrow Fidel Castro, tension happened

After finding what the images of U-2 showed, the US had to make a plan (1)

More images showed more construction sites of missiles (2)

US sent indirect message stating the "graves of consequences" would happen (3)

Kennedy does his things, I mean eats a sandwich and does crap and talks (4)

Naval quarantine on Cuba (5)

General Walter Sweeny does not guarantee the destruction of missile sites (Kennedy shocked 😱) (6)

Kennedy calls other presidents to take a decision and tells British prime minister about the situation and writes letter to soviets (7)

US tells the UN the crisis, also soviets threaten the quarantine (8)

Soviets respond to letter saying "stop intimidating me, baa me don't like threats" (9)

Cuba prepares missiles, Kennedy nervous 😬, writes another letter and debate in UN showing photographs (10)

More photos of missile sites, Cuba will send missiles if US tries to invade (asking the soviets) and Soviets and the US make promise to remove quarantine and not invade Cuba in exchange for no missiles (11)

US removes missiles in Turkey as part of agreement and U-2 plane is shot down and Kennedy trembles in fear preparing attack to Cuba (12)

Soviets agree terms of agreement and remove missiles in Cuba (13)

Vietnam stuff

Vietnam War

People react to US involment in Vietnam:

North Vietnamese Torpedoed American Destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin

President Johnson states that they should repel any armed attack against them

Congress passed Gulf of Tonkin resolution. The US went into war without permission of the congress

Tet Offensive: North Vietnamese attack South part and US Embassy

Tet offensive was turning point in was psychologically (communists win)

New president Nixon removes US from Vietnam

Now the US fought two wars without declaration from congress

Because of the 2 wars, War powers act was passed for checks and balances

Fall of Saigon occurred (Americans abandoned embassy and south Vietnamese tried to flee)

North wins, war is over, sadness 😢

People were angry 😠 and the US was viewed as an aggressor to undeveloped countries

Tinker V. Des Moines:

2 children wore armbands for peace

School got mad at them

Parents sued the school and won

Since so many US soldiers got drafted, there was draft resistance

Because of draft protests (not able to vote but to fight at 18), 26th amendment lowered the voting age to 18

Silent majority are the people that supported the US
