Weathering & Erosion
Weathering
Chemical Weathering
-
Acids
Rainwater becomes acidic from lightning or pollution, as the CO2 dissolves in it. The acid rain, reacts with the rock minerals causing weathering.
-
Physical Weathering
-
Action of water and ice
Water runs over rocks gradually wearing them away, Ice widens cracks made in the rocks as it expands.
Crystallisation of salts
Salts form crystals when the water evaporates, if the crystals form inside a rock, it can cause it to expand and break.
-
Living Plants
Plant rocks can grow through fine cracks in rocks, expanding the crack as the root thickens.
