The Anglo-Irish- Descendants if the Anglo-Normans who had invaded Ireland in the 12th Century (Fitzgeralds of Kildare).

1609- Six counties (different to NI now)- Donegal, Derry, Tyrone, Armagh, Fermanagh and Cavan.

Three types of Planters: Undertakers- English or Scottish undertakers, 2000 acres of land with a bawn (courtyard) around them. Paid the King £5 per 1,000 acres.
Servitors- English or Scottish soldiers who had fought for the crown. 1,000-1,500 acres paid £8 to the King. Could have Irish tenants.
Loyal Irish- Native Irish who had stayed loyal to the English during the 9 year war. 1,000 for £10. Watched by the Servitors.

Key Terms-
The Pale- Dublin and the surrounding area under direct rule of the Crown. Spoke English and followed the Common Law and used English customs.
Surrender and Regrant- Peaceful policy to take control of Ireland. Anglo-Irish and Gaelic Irish rulers would surrender (give up) their land to King Henry VIII and he would grant (give) it back to them with an English title.
