The Four Macromolecules
Lipids
-
Contains (CHO): Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
Can be found in foods rich in oils, avocados, diary products such as butter, and animal meats.
Creates barriers for cell-membranes, makes hormones and cholesterol, and can be utilized as (long-term) sources of energy when Carbohydrates are low.
Nucleic acids
Nucleic acids are found in all living things, and thus all foods you eat!
Contains (CHONP): Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus.
-
-
Carbohydrates
Contains (CHO): Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
Can be found in a wide array of both healthy foods and unhealthy foods, such as bread, milk, and popcorn.
-
Serve as (short-term) energy sources, and provides structural supports: cell walls in plant cells, and muscle tissues in animals.
Proteins
-
Contains (CHON): Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen.
Animal-based products such as fish, meats, and eggs, tend to be good sources in proteins. Vegetable products, except for soy-baseds, are generally lacking in proteins.
-
Provides structural-support, transport substances, supports cell-communications, and speeds up reactions as needed.
