Causes of Water Pollution
Sewage
Treated and untreated waste products from homes, boats, industrial buildings etc.
Can contain harmful bacteria that can poison drinking and irrigation water supplies. Can also poison seafood which if eaten will poison humans
Destroys fish farms by poisoning all of the fish
Too much growth of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and protozoa makes the water cloudy. The microorganisms also use up all the oxygen so native organisms suffocate

Litter
Rubbish gets into waterways through stormwater drains
Rubbish is visual pollution
As of 2021, there are at least 363,762,732,605 pounds of plastic pollution in the world's oceans.
Plastics can kill animals that live in the waterways
Up to 1 million animals die every year from ingesting or getting entangled in plastic

Phosphates
When algae die, they release toxins to kill water organisms. Which results in not being able to drink or use water for irrigation
Cause algae to grow which suffocates organisms in the water, it takes up all of the oxygen
Nitrates
Get into drinking water and cause blue baby syndrome, which will cause death
9-14% of babies are affected by this. About 75% of infants survive to 1 year of age and 69% survive to 18 years of age

Kills plants and animals

Forms a layer on top of the water that stops oxygen getting in and organisms living in water suffocate
Coats the feathers of birds so that they cannot fly. So, most end up dying due to the lack of food they receive

Metals end up in the water, fish eat the metals, so that when we eat the fish, we also eat the metals which can poison us. The problem is our bodies cannot break the metals down, so they build up in us
