Lived in a beehive hut - Is a dry-stone hut where monks slept and prayed- Skellig Michael is our example
Examples of Irish monasteries- Inis Mór, Glendalough, Clonmacnoise
Round tower were built for protection in large monasteries.
Used as a look out tower/ store valuables/ show prestige/ protection
The Art of Early Christian Ireland
Metalwork - Chalices, brooches, bells and cups made of metal with Celtic designs. Example: Ardagh Chalice and the Cross of Cong.
High crosses - Free standing stone, with elaborate carvings depicting scenes from the bible. Used to educate people about Christianity
Art was made to honour God and show monasteries importance
Manuscripts: Books written by monks in a scriptorium. Often written in Latin, by hand and on sheep skin parchment or vellum (calfksin). Example: The Books of Kells

Impact of Irish monks abroad
Roman Empire fell- the Dark Ages started (war).
The Vikings came to Ireland and the monks fled to Europe to set up monasteries in Europe
Created manuscripts in the Irish style and worked to spread Christianity
Art form monks used on manuscripts was called La Tene
Golden Age= Irish monks producing manuscripts in Irish style and establishing monasteries and spreading Christianity in Europe
Missionaries- St. Colmcille- founded monasteries in Derry and Iona (island off Scotland).
St Columbanus- Monastery in Down and Bobbio in Italy
Arrival of the Vikings to Ireland
Vikings originated in Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden and Norway)
Skilled farmers and fishermen
Attacked rich Irish monasteries from the year AD795
Longphorts: Camps by the water used as a base for raids. Grew into large towns- Wexford, Dublin and Wicklow.
Helped to transform the Irish economy along with Irish culture and politics
