They all tell a story that has sadness to it.
Wednesday:Ash
Ash is a poem about a house. A house that is full of memories, but not life. It is a lonely, depressing house.
This relates to sadness that is throughout all poems.
Monday: "My Papa's Waltz¨ This poem talks about alcohol and issues within a household.
"My right ear scraped a buckle.
You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt."
The narrator appears to be a child who is in an unhealthy household and is mistreated by their father.
Tuesday: The Women Hanging from the Thirteenth Floor Window
"But she is the woman hanging from the 13th floor window,
and she knows she is hanging by her own fingers, her
own skin, her own thread of indecision."
This story is about a girl who is hanging from a window. Deciding whether to let go and end her life or climb back inside through the window. What saves her from this is remembering her family.
"She thinks of Carlos, of Margaret, of Jimmy.
She thinks of her father, and of her mother."
After thinking of them, and memories she has been through ultimately, she decides to climb back inside through the window.
Thursday: Mirror
Mirror is a poem about a mirror who sits on a wall except for when a girl uses it to look at herself. The girl looks at herself in a negative way and does not like how she looks due to aging. This has a sadness to it because the only time the mirror has a purpose is when the girl uses it, and when the girl uses it she looks at her reflection negatively.
"She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish."
"House whose rooms are pooled with blood.
House with hands. House of guilt. House
That other houses built. House of lies
And pride and bone."
