Human Purpose and Development
The Woman Hanging from the Thirteenth Floor
"She thinks she remembers listening to her own life break loose, as she falls from the 13th floor window on the east side of Chicago, or as she climbs back up to claim herself again."
"She sees other women hanging from many-floored windows counting their lives in the palm of their hands and in the palm of their children's hands."
I think the first quote represents human purpose and development as it suggests that she has recognized the point where it had begun to all go downhill and that it is up to her for how her story continues. The second quote emphasizes how in intense moments we take the time to consider what is of value to us in life.
Ash
"House with hands. House of guilt. House that other houses built. House of lies and pride and bone. House afraid to be alone."
"House that believes it is not a house."
The quote on the left highlights how through the growing process and insecurities we face, it can leave us to feel lost and not as our true self. The quote on the right adds to this by listing what can cause us to break down and reach that point.
I feel as though "Ash", and "The Woman Hanging from the thirteenth floor can connect because we could make a story of how the build-up of emotions in Ash, can lead us to that breaking point described in the 13th-floor poem. It shows that there are many paths one might take to face their conflicts.
I feel like we can make a connection between Ash and the castle excerpt. I think they both brings about feelings of possible regret and self-reflection. What's more, when a person or place of peace is destroyed it can make it not enjoyable and isolated.
Castle Excerpt 1
"Whatever planned to be colorful lost its heart quickly in this village."
" And I wonder whether I would have chosen differently if I had known that these were the last books, the ones which would stand forever on our kitchen shelf."
The first quote represents the theme as it suggests that we never know what can happen in life, and we ought to think more deeply when making decisions. The second quote is discussing how people and places change, and the cause can be from various factors that surround it. How we act affects the environment around us.
Mirror
"A woman bends over me, searching my reaches for what she really is."
"Whatever I see I swallow immediately, just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike. I am not curel, only truthful"
The first quote demonstrates the journey of how we look in many places to find what our purpose is as we grow in life. The second quote is saying how the world is brutal and truthful, and whether we accept it or turn away from it is based on each person and their struggles.
I feel like a connection can be made between the 13th-floor poem and Mirror. I say that because maybe the discussion happening in "Mirror", is the mindset and final thoughts of the person who is either about to fall from the 13th floor or acts as a motivation to try another chance and fix things. The longing for a purpose and satisfaction so that the fall of the 13th floor doesn't have to be the end result.
