Why is Responsible Consumption and Production Important and How Does it Impact the World?
Social Media Influence
Trending Products: Social media often tries to convince consumers that they need more than they have. They do this by capitalizing on the success of popular products which leads to more production of the product.
Celebrity Influence: Companies hire celebrities or other people of influence to review and promote their products to a larger audience. People often search for reviews of products before they buy them. Therefore, seeing someone they trust reviewing a product leads to more consumption.
Ads: All social media platforms have ads and are often catered to the consumer based on previous browsing history. The more a consumer clicks on an ad, the more it shows up on their feed.

What is Over consumption and Overproduction?
Overproduction is producing more goods than what is needed.
Over consumption is the excessive use of goods or services.
History of Overproduction
Overproduction was the leading cause of the Great Depression. More products were being produced than people could afford. This caused prices to lower but companies were losing profit which also led to workers being laid off and factories shutting down.
The idea of overconsuming started to become more prominent in the 1920s after the World War. Mit.edu states, "U.S. production was more than 12 times greater in 1920 than in 1860, while the population over the same period had increased by only a factor of three."

Inflation Rate
According to Forbes website, in the United States inflation has averaged 1.88%. In 2022, the annual inflation rate was 8%.
Overproducing decreases demand which provokes inflation.
Quality vs. Quantity
In order to keep up with other businesses and the latest trends, companies are constantly producing products at.a fast pace. This often causes the products to lose their quality because less time is spent on making them.
In today's society, many people buy in bulk because we have learned that the quality of most products nowadays aren't made very well.
Companies have capitalized on the bad quality of their products. They have learned that if they make their products cheap then they are more likely to break. Therefore, if the products keep breaking then people keep buying more. So, overall, companies actually make more money the cheaper their products are.
