inequalities in the US
poverty
some ethnic groups such as blacks, hispanics and native americans are more likely to face higher rates of poverty in the US. higher poverty rates can be caused by having low income jobs which doesn't help many pass the poverty line.
for example, hispanics are more likely to have jobs in food preparation or construction whereas whites are more likely to have jobs in science, engineering and healthcare.
:
however, the government has introduced SNAP. SNAP is the supplemental nutrition assistance programme in which the government provides food stamps for the lowest paying Americans to pay for food.
for example, more than 15% of the population receives SNAP aid, more than 20% of them being african americans.
education
for example, Hispanic and African American children are 4 times more likely to be enrolled in one of New York's lowest attaining schools than a white student.
However, the US government has attempted to reduce this inequality by introducing head start. programme that provides early-childhood education and health services to low-income families with young children.
for example, , over 1 million families are involved with head start, with a high portion of them being ethnic minorities.
some groups are more likely to face inequalities in education due to them living in poorer areas. people living in poverty can suffer in education due to the lack of resources and good quality teachers. ethnic minority groups are also more likely to face systemic racism and can lack role models.
healthcare
Ethnic minority groups are more likely to suffer from having no insurance such as blacks and hispanics. many citizens not having insurance is poverty and low paying jobs, this affects many ethnic minority groups working in food preparation and construction.
for example, african americans and hispanics are much more likely to have no insurance - african americans are 55% more likely to have none.
However, the US government has attempted to reduce this inequality by introducing the PPACA, patient protection and affordable care act - or Obamacare. The aim was to provide near-universal health coverage for Americans by increasing numbers of people insured.
For example, 20 million Americans have now gained coverage through the PPACA, 6.8 million of them are african americans who previously were uninsured.
crime and law
African Americans and hispanics are more likely to be perpetrators, and victims of violence more than whites.police in the US have been accused of racial profiling, targeting hispanics and blacks by doing stops and searches because of their ethnicity.
However, since 2021 after the death of George floyd, the black lives matter movement aims to draw attention to mistreatment of ethnic minority groups from law enforcement.
for example, As a result of BLM, mayor Bill de Blasio of New York city pledged to move funding from law enforcement to youth and social services.
