Phil is a 65 year old man who lives with his son. However he has gone away on a trip and a home nurse is in to visit. The nurse notices that Phil doesn't look like his regular self with a grimace on his face.
Hello Phil, it is nice to see you this morning. How are you?
I have been okay. My son is away this weekend so I've just been relaxing, its nice having to have the house to my self without anyone breathing down my neck.
Thats nice you are enjoying this time to your self, but I do want to ask... Is everything okay? you don't seem too well.
I'm just having some pain, its nothing.
Oh no, I can see by your facial expressions that you are in discomfort Phil. I just want to help you. Have you been taking your medication?
I'll be honest with you. I haven't. I only take the meds because my son wants me to, I think I am getting better and don't need medication anymore.
Thank you for being honest. Your son is looking out for you and so am I. I know you are feeling better however, taking your medications daily and on time is very important to manage your symptoms. Do you know what medication you take?
-
i appreciate you for telling me. Your symptoms have definitely improved since taking medication. However, Phil do you understand why it is important to take your medications daily?
Not really.
To start, Parkinson's disease can't be cured, but medications can help control the symptoms. One of the primary medications you take right now is Cardipoa-Levodopa, this is known to the be the most effective PD medication as it helps to increase dopamine concentrations.. Levodopa works by being converted to dopamine in the brain and the carbidopa helps by preventing the levodopa from being broken down before it reaches. It's important to stay consistent to let the medications do its job.
Okay, here is your medication for today
You should be taking your medications at their scheduled time and according to instruction to ensure the medication is doing what it is supposed to in your body. If you skip a few days and just take when needed then it really sets you back and your symptoms will be out of control. Does that make sense?

That is true, if you are feeling better than you can stop taking your medication.
