human body systems
Immune system: to protect the organism using the 3 lines of defense
Phagocytes
eat invaders
B-cells
Create antibodies
Antibodies
Proteins that latch onto, damage, clump, and slow foreign
particles
Mucus
When you breathe, foreign particles bump into mucus and
become stuck.
Skin
Shield against invaders.
Saliva
Break down bacteria
T-cells
Kill invaders
Cilia
Cilia sweep mucus into the throat for coughing and swallowing.
Digestive System Function: Breaks down food into
nutrients
stomach
Stores food and breaks down the food with acid and physical
churning.
liver
Filters blood coming from the digestive tract. The liver produces
bile that aids in the digestion of fatty foods.
Esophagus
The stretchy tube that food travels down from the back of the
throat to the stomach.
Mouth
The teeth breakdown food into smaller pieces. The tongue
pushes the food to the esophagus.
gall bladder
Stores bile produced by the liver until it is needed to break down
fatty food in the small intestine
pancreas
Secretes enzymes into the small intestine to farther break down
food.
small intestine
Breaks down food into even smaller parts using enzymes from
the pancreas and bile from the liver
large intestine
Receives waste from the small intestine. it absorbs any
remaining water. Transmits waste for elimination.
rectum
Last section of the large intestine before reaching the anus
where waste is expelled.
Levels of Organization
organs
organ system
tissue
organism
Cells
Urinary system: to filter blood and create urine
Ureters
Urine
Kidney
Bladder
Urethra
Circulatory System Function: Gives oxygen
throughout your body
veins
They collect oxygen-poor blood and return it to your heart
arteries
Arteries distribute oxygen-rich blood to your body
blood
transporting oxygen and nutrients to the lungs and tissues.
Heart
It pumps blood around your body as your heart beats
Cappilaries
They transport blood, nutrients
and oxygen to cells
Muscular system: Responsible for
movement.
ligaments
Help strengthen and stabilize joints, permitting movement only in
certain directions.
bones
Protect the body's organs, support the weight of the body, and
give the body shape
muscles
They are responsible for movement
tendons
A tendon serves to move the bone or structure.
soft tissues
Soft tissues connect and support other tissues and surround the
organs in the body
Reproductive system: helps organism through sex
vagina
passage for the penis to put in sperm
testes
They make sperm and are also involved in producing a hormone
called testosterone.
cervix
allows fluids to flow inside and out of your uterus.
uteres
Nourish the developing fetus
ovaries
Makes eggs and hormones
Respiratory System
Function: Allow us to breathe
Bronchi
They carry air to and from your lungs
Trachea
They carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs
Alveoli
where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen
and carbon dioxide
Lungs
Allow us to breathe
Nervous System: Transmits signals from the brain to body
Spinal Cord
The pathway for messages sent by the brain to the body and
from the body to the brain.
Nerves
They carry electrical impulses between your brain and the rest of
your body.
Brain
Controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision ,breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that runs our
body.
Endocrine system: releases hormones into bloodstream
Pancreas
They produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism
Pancreas
They create natural juices called pancreatic enzymes to break
down foods
Thyroid
They support the rate at which the body uses fats and
carbohydrates
Skeletal system: Gives body protection
and structure.
ligaments
Holds structures together and keep them stable.
cartiladge
Provide support on bony areas where there is a need for
flexibility.
Bones
provides shape and support for the body, as well as
protection for some organs
