ROLE OF THE FATHER - Coggle Diagram
ROLE OF THE FATHER
Shaffer + Emerson
-
They found secondary attachments in the following months which includes that father - 75% form an attachment with the father by 18 months
RESEARCH SUPPORT - WHYTE
-
Whyte found that fathers play the role of the playmate, encourage physical activity, encourage problem solving + risk taking
It was further suggested that a lack of sensitivity from a father may be positive as it encourages this type of behaviour
-
Varissmo
Found that the quality of the relationship between father + toddler significantly correlated with the number of friends they had at preschool
Also found that father and toddler relationship was more important than the attachment with their mother
-
Differences in the role between the mother and the father - nurturing vs playmate - may be linked to traditional roles
-
-
-
It's possible that these differences are a result of biology e.g. females produce oestrogen which promotes nurturing + sensitivity so males are not biologically equipped to be sensitive and nurturing
IF FATHERS PLAY A VITAL ROLE THEN WE WOULD EXPECT CHILDREN WITHOUT FATHERS TO BE VERY DIFFERENT - MCCALLUM
McCallum found thatchildren growing up in single/same sex families do not develop any differently from those in two parent hetero-sexual families
-
-
Real world application
- It can be used to offer advice to parents
- Parents sometimes agonise over decisions like who should take on the PCG role
- For some, this can even mean worrying about whether to have children at all
- Mothers may feel pressured to stay at home due to stereotypical views
- Fathers may also feel pressured to focus on work rather than parenting
- Research into the role of the rather can be used to offer reassuring advice to parents
- E.g. heterosexual parents can be informed that fathers are quite capable of becoming primary attachment figures
- Lesbian couples/single mothers can be informed that not having a father around does not affect a child's development
