the ppt was paired with a confederate. took draws to find out who would be the 'learner' and who would be the 'teacher'. draw was fixed so ppt was always the teacher.
learner in one room and teacher in another room with researcher. this room contained the shock generator which ppts thought were real. ranged from 15v (slight shock) - 450v (XXX).
40 American men, aged 20-50, whose jobs ranged from unskilled to professional.
the ppt was told to read out pairs or words that the confederate had to remember. if the learner got it wrong the ppt had to give them a shock. they had to increase the shock voltage each time.

Aims
to test the 'Germans are different hypothesis', claims that Germans are highly obedient.
To see if individuals would obey the orders of an authority figure that incurred negative consequences and went against their moral codes.

obedience = a form of social influence in which an individual follows a direct order. the person issuing the order is normally a figure of authority.
