chapter 4
How do top down and bottom up regulation of organisms differ?
The bottom-up effect means that a lower trophic level in the biological network affects the community structure of higher trophic levels by means of resource restriction
The top-down effect refers to a higher trophic level influences the community structure of a lower trophic level through predation
Define a critical number. How is this used in wildlife conservation?
-
areas within existing public lands that require special management to protect important and relevant values
Draw a population logistic, J-curve, and S-curve (note where carrying capacity, K, is). When do we find each in nature?
-
What is the difference between a population and a community?
A population is a group of the same species living in the same area. A community is a group of different species living in the same area.
Tell me about Darwin’s finches.
-
What is the difference between biotic potential and environmental resistance?
Biotic potential increases the population of a species while environmental resistance decreases its growth.
What is the pattern of change equation?
-
How do intra and interspecific competition differ?
Interspecific competition occurs between individuals of different species. Intraspecific competition occurs between individuals of the same species.
What is the difference between K vs. R strategists? How do K vs. R strategists relate to survivorship patterns?
The r strategists live in unstable and unpredictable environments hence they produce many offspring while the K strategists live in more stable and predictable environments hence they make few offsprings.
What is a selective pressure, the process of natural selection, and how do they relate to evolution?
an evolutionary force that causes a particular phenotype to be more favorable in certain environmental conditions
What is environmental resistance?
-
What affects an organism’s biotic potential and environmental resistance?
-
What are the two forms of population limits? What do they involve?
-
