- - - - Sink estates- sink estates are social housing estates that are percieved as the least desireabke places to live by the population. they tend to house the lowest income residents who are often the most in need of support. in the UK, some council estates would be viewd as sink estatates
      - Gated communities- gated communities are places where wealthy residential areas are fences off from other. They usually have security gates and entry systems. These communitues are very common in South Aftria, where inequality is very high and they used to have aparthied
- - - - Social polarisation- describes the segregation that can happen in a society because of income inequality and a lack of economic opportunities
      - Discimination and prejudice- discrimination and prejudice against a certain ethinic background,religion or group of people can lead to conflict. eg the london riots of august 2011 started in tottenham after the shooting of mark duggan. many rioters claiming they were discriminated by police
      - Frustration about position in society- many people fel frustrated about their position in society, inequality and a lack of will of anyone to change their situation
      - Political views- people with diff political viewpoints can conflict within a community. eg in the US after trumps election, there was a lot of tension within communities between people who voted for trump and clinton supporters
      - Marginalised groups- some people can feel marginalised because of a lack of political engagment and representation. these people can feel like they are in a helpless situation

        some developments are approved by the gov as they are in 'national intrest'
        fracking for shale gas, quarrying and nuclear power stations may be approved for this reason
        eg in 2018, Cuadrilla got approval from the gov to frack for gas in lancashire
      - Infrastructure
        Investment in UK infra seeks to address issues of regional accesability and eco growth
      - Regulation- 'planning gain'
        'planning gain' is a scheme for private homes, where they only get planning permission if they include a certain percentage of affordable homes. They can slo offer to improve instra, but the developer has to pay for this

        National gov sets the planning policies within which development canot happen:
        Greenbelt land is protected green space (often farmland around urban areas)
        conservation areas have strict planning regulations that stop the development of almost anything except small-scale residential and commercial schemes
      - National infrastructure projects
        The UK motorway network including adding new routes and maintining the existing ones
        The HS2 rail link between London and birmingham, which will then be extended to manchester and leeds
        the development of regional airports(eg newcastle, manchester and robin hood in doncaster)
        the roll-out of broadband across the UK including rural areas) BT is mandated to manage this and meet the minimum standards set by the gov
