Causes of World Hunger
-
Poverty
37 million out of 89.56 million Congolese are malnourished. This has been recorded year after year as one of the world's poorest countries.
-
-
Families in this cycle of poverty usually cannot afford nutritious food, leading to undernourishment.
-
Conflict
-
-
Results in crop failure, and imported goods are unaffordable due to soaring inflation rates.
-
Results to conflict: Infrastructures are destroyed, imports cease, inflation rates rise, currency devalues, roads cut off, jobs lost.
-
Poor Nutrition
Hunger isn't just a lack of access of food, but a lack of the right nutrients.
Families in poverty usually only rely on 1 or 2 staple foods, which means they are not getting enough critical macronutrients/ vitamins.
Lack of nutrients for pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children is the most common and the most effected.
Lack of nutrition increases the likelihood of disease, poor health, and cognitive impairment.
-
Gender Inequality
"If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million."
Female farmers are responsible for growing, harvesting, preparing and selling the majority of food in poor countries. Yet women are underrepresented at important decisions on policy and resources on the frontlines of fighting hunger.
