Unique Pedagogical Philosophy - Or Quote that Guides Your Practice
“Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.”

"And if those children are unresponsive,
maybe you can't teach them yet, but you
can love them. And if you love them today, maybe you can teach them tomorrow."

Math has always had a negative stigma surrounding it. My goal when I first decided to become a teacher was to change that stigma. Math is challenging, but the act of preserving through the struggle is what I try to focus on in my philosophy. It's okay to fail, because success is always found by learning from your failures.

Bellringer/Exit Ticket Sheets: At the beginning of each week, I give students a sheet that has space for each day for a bellringer and an exit ticket. The bell ringers and exit tickets are written on the board in the same place daily, so that students are familiar with our daily routine. This has helped not only with student routines, but also with assessing student knowledge. (8th Grade ELA- Ashley Crisp)
https://skribbl.io/ for vocabulary review using custom words - it is like pictionary and I think would be appropriate for 2nd through 12th (Julie Hughes)

Classkick! It is an online tool where you can upload pdfs and the students work on it virtually. (less papers to keep up with!) (3rd grade- Lauren M)
Classroom Screen (https://classroomscreen.com/) You have to start a new page each day in the free version, but it has sound levels, text boxes, work symbols, etc. So many ways to use this! Lauren C

This is a great resource for branches of science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology). I use the simulations in this program often because it's a way for the students to visualize our lessons. Ex. Adding neutrons to an atom which results in a greater mass and a new isotope. They are able to then see the effects of subatomic particles inside the atom.
9-12 grades at MHS (Kasey Kolodski)
Boom Cards are
digital task cards that give students instant feedback as they play through the deck. These are excellent resources to work on specific skills. I use them in math.

Daily ELA review - it's a Mon-Fri one-pager that reviews all essential ELA skills. The questions/activities are engaging and there's a weekly quiz that goes with it. I use these as warm-ups. We go over the questions together each day. I have used this for 3+ years and will continue because it helps students to retain information through spiral review.

*This is an activity I use when starting Poetry. I find most of my students don't enjoy poetry because they are unsure of how to break it down and understand all the parts. We do a sample poem together, then I let them try another one on their own.

Self-Created Activities
Vocabulary review game called Knockout. Students form 2 lines. They battle against one another to match the definition or sentence with the correct word. I just created a google slides presentation and update it with the new words each week. I use music to keep it fast-paced. They LOVE this activity and it keeps them motivated to truly learn the words so that they can stay in the game.
This is appropriate for 3rd grade+ (Kayla Lopp - 4th grade ELA at AES)
Letrs Unit 3 Session 4 has an Alphabet Arc. I really liked this especially for my lower students to identify their letters. I added to it so that not only do they identify the letter but they also come up with a word to go with that letter. Then they have to draw a picture that also goes with the letter/word. (Lauren M 3rd grade)
ALL ABOUT ME getting to know you at the start of the semester/year activity: shorturl.at/beqxC and the directions can be found here: shorturl.at/gB346 - this could be for middle school up I'd say (Julie Hughes)

Monday Sketch-a-thons
:pencil2:
On every monday there is a set of drawing steps that I create, there are 3-4 drawings to complete for the day and they each have gaps or open ended parts that can be altered up to the students imagination. This lets the students add something they CAN draw in their brain while also being able to be creative.

Mock Trial for texts. I created a mock trial to go along with my English IV class reading Beowulfand Grendel* and students really get into looking at the text as a resource in the trial. (Stacy Van Buskirk, MHS)

Every good artist paints what he is. -Jackson Pollock :pencil2:
