Mind Map #3
What are the main points of the text?
Large and fatal gender gap cardiovascular treatment
Women are three time more likely to die than men after a serious heart attack
The Journal of the American Heart Association ran a study that bypassed symptomatic observations to remove any form of bias to this study.
A nurse who was unaware of any current diagnosis of heart attack was asked to do blood tests on individuals who had a heart attack.
Both men and women explained the same symptoms to the nurse: Chest pain and left arm pain
A 2018 study published in the journal Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders found that cardiovascular disease is more fatal for trans people than their cisgender peers.
A 2017 study published by the JAMA Network found that women doctors consistently have better patient outcomes than male doctors
What are the main steps of the argument?
The myth regarding women and men having different heart attack symptoms has been debunked.
The gender disparity was blatant sexism in the training of male physicians
The patients of women doctors, regardless of gender, were more likely to live than those of male doctors. And further, the study found that the mortality rates of male doctors' patients decreased when they practiced with more women colleagues, strongly suggesting that sexism in medical training biases male doctors in ways that cost women their lives.
Seeking second opinions when possible and not letting your medical concerns be dismissed as anxiety or overreaction is a start, but so is a fundamental restructuring of medical education and institutional processes.
Do I agree with the author?
I agree that there is an ongoing issue with how women are treated in the healthcare system, which has been going on for many generations. Women are often told, "the pain is just in your head," or "you are overreacting."
I don't know how deep this goes with how old the doctor is and how they treat women in the industry because it's usually the more senior doctors who don't care about their patients, and even as a male, I have had this experience
I also believe that women doctors do care more about their patients and what they have to say about their status/next steps to becoming healthier.
These actions are rooted in the industry and it will take years and a new generation of doctors to fix the mess that is currently happening. If i were still going into nursing i always told myself that i would treat a patient like they were a family member and not just another number in the system.
What was the authors purpose?
Jay Polish
The author's purpose was to shed some light on the disparities women experience in the healthcare system due to sexism in the industry.
I have also been a victim of being taught misinformation regarding women and heart attacks.
