        A novel about a very poor future where every also has access to VR Tech. The whole thing reads like an angsty nerd's fantasy and is full of references to 80s pop culture. The film is similar, but a lot of the 80s references are changed to be a range of pop culture references from the 80s to the 2010s. The film also does that really dumb thing where a character is considered because of her 'horrible, disfiguring birthmark' but she is played a generically pretty person with a small make-up effect on her face.
      - Lord of the Flies
        
        Written before this 'genre' was labelled, this is a fiction novel about teenagers and has teenagers as the target audience, so I guess it fits. A class of private school boys crash land on an island. The rest of the novel involves fire, toxic masculinity, violence, the thrill of the hate, maybe a visit from Satan and cannibalism.

- - - - Miles' subversion of this cliche is the major point of his final essay (the ending passage of the novel). Miles believes that humans are more than the meat that makes up our bodies, and what it is that makes us more than meat is invincible.
  - - - Miles definitely saves his most flowery figurative language for when he is describing Alaska. This is interesting as he spends a fair bit of novel implying that he doesn't particularly like fiction or poetry. Maybe Miles does like purple prose (an idiom for unnecessarily dramatic language), but only uses it when he sees something he thinks is truly beautiful.
