The Five Teaching Styles and How I Can Make Them Fit My Visual Learning Style
Authority
Teacher tends to lecture while using chalkboards.
Students are expected to take notes
As a Visual Learner, with this teacher I would have to make sure I write down only major points. Otherwise I would write too much. I would also meet them right after class or during their office hours to make sure I am studying the correct notes for the test. I would make sure I have whatever is written on the board in my notes.
Demonstrator
Teacher prefers to lecture, but likes to show students what they are doing
Uses visual aids, power point presentations, and handouts
As a Visual Learner, with this teacher I would take my notes directly on the handouts as opposed to inside of a notebook. That way I can see exactly what the instructor is talking about. I would also take pictures of the power point if the instructor did not send it to the students in an email, or post it to d2l.
Facilitator
Teacher relies heavily on class discussion
Also relies student participation
Provides and guiding question
As a Visual Learner, I would write down the question the teacher provides so I could think about it myself later, but while in class I would pay attention to the most engaged student, and write down the key points this person makes, especially if it results in an engaged one-on-one with the professor.
Delegator
Structures class around student run projects
Their own teaching takes a back seat to student teaching
As a Visual Learner, I would have to create note cards and visual aids for myself to help retain the information. I would then meet with the teach during office hours to make sure my notes and aids were on track with the lesson.
Hybrid
Uses multiple techniques
Provides opportunities for different learning styles
As a Visual Learner, with this class I would take notes during the lecture, as well as during the discussion. During the class activity I would refer to the notes taken during the lecture and discussion to better understand the key points of the activity.
