Factors affecting the lack of global quality education
COVID-19
School closures due to the COVID-19 outbreak has caused a global education crisis due to the disruptions in face to face classes.
147 million children missed in class instruction for two years because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Some countries lack network infrastructures, computers, and internet access utilized for distance learning, so therefore those students are at a major learning disadvantage.
87% of the worlds population effected by the closure of schools and face to face learning. Children are left to rely on parents, family members, and friends to teach them. Some children were never taught during school closures and missed two years worth of education.
Distance learning became a way of trying to continue education while in person school was not available. Some schools provided children with chrome books to take home to continue their education, but poor countries do not even have internet access leaving education outside of the classroom impossible.
COVID-19's impact on education
The level of distance learning received depended on the advantage of the parents. More advantaged parents were able to provide their children with access to computers, help, and make sure they stayed on track. Less privileged or poor children were at a disadvantage because of the lack of resources and help that could be provided at home. Parents had to take over the role of teacher and children were at the mercy of the ability of their parents.
Poverty
Places where poverty is high often times do not have actual schools for children to attend, so therefore educations are not even an option
Teachers in places stricken with poverty are not properly and appropriately trained to teach children. Children are not receiving quality educations, when given the opportunity, because teachers are often times not educated enough to teach.
The lack of funds to go towards education greatly effects the quality of education children living in poverty receive. While every child has the right to free basic education, countries that struggle to keep people fed have a harder time offering education.
Learning materials needed to teach children are also very hard to come by in countries with great poverty. Textbooks, classrooms, classroom supplies, etc. can be expensive and not the first place money will be spent in countries living in poverty.
Hunger and poor nutrition children in countries suffering from poverty are at risk of being stunted. An estimated 155 million children under the age of 5 years old are expected to be stunted which affects brain development in extreme ways.
If there are actual schools for children to attend, they are often times a very long distance from their homes. Children are required to travel, by foot, long distances in various types of weather to even attend class.
Quality of Schools
The quality of the facility and school as a whole has a great impact on the quality of education that can be provided to students.
The number of students per teacher is a major factor of the quality of education children receive because of the amount of time that can be given depending on the overload of children in one classroom.
Mainly seen in elementary education, teachers are required to teach multiple subject fields all by themselves. If a teacher has a weakness in a certain area, that will carry over to the education that will be received by children in that area.
While every child has the basic right to free public education, some schools are funded better than others giving better learning opportunities where more funds are.
Training teachers are provided through the schools they teach at can elevate the level of education they can provide to students.
Lower quality schools, or no schools at all, exist in poor countries lessening the opportunity for quality education across the world.
Discrimination
Women in poor countries are struggling to receive the same rights to education as men. Women are needed and expected at home.
The state of gender equality in education
COVID-19 left many students suffering with mental health issues that are not taken seriously or treated appropriately.
Students with learning disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, etc. are not receiving proper help to ensure they are getting a quality education.
Often times gifted children are easier to teach than children who do not learn as quickly or as well.
Children who come from different social classes have differing learning abilities.
Access to pre primary education
Children wanting to enroll in pre school through an elementary school are required to meet a criteria of a delay or disability in order to qualify and attend.
Pre school outside of elementary schools are often in the form of daycare and require payment to attend that can be very expensive.
"Teachers" at daycare facilities are not teachers with a bachelors degree. Their education cannot be compared to children who attend pre school at elementary schools.
Public funded pre school is mostly provided to 4 to 5 years olds. 3 year olds are typically not given the opportunity of attending public pre school.
