"Dengue" originates from Swahili as “Ka-dinga pepo”, meaning “cramp-like seizure”.

Cause/Transmission
If the female mosquito “aedes aegypti” bites a person who is infected with dengue and takes their blood, they get infected with dengue fever. Around one week later, the mosquito can transmit the disease to a healthy person by biting them.

Previous outbreaks
There have been many outbreaks of dengue fever, for example the DENV-1 outbreak in Madeira, Portugal.
Incidence
Between 100- and 400 million infections take place each year, though 3 out of 4 are asymptomatic.
Distribution
The affected areas are the tropical and subtropical areas of the world like Southeast-Asia and South America, for example.
