Poverty Explained
Homelessness
-
-
One thing that increases the homelessness rate is the lack of jobs available. When unemployment rates increase, jobs are hard to find in the economy. Even when people find jobs, that doesn't mean an out-of-poverty. (Homelessness in America, 2022)
A decline in public assistance also contributes to poverty. This means not being able medical or food, and sometimes loss of housing from low income. (Homelessness in America, 2022)
Lack of affordable health care can lead to homelessness. Those who pay rent and struggle with an illness or disability can become homeless by losing a job or running completely out of savings for their health needs. (Homelessness in America, 2022)
Domestic violence is another cause of being homeless. Those who suffer in an abusive relationship may choose to be homeless than live in a toxic environment. (Homelessness in America, 2022)
Mental illness can lead to homelessness. Around 16% of the adults that are homeless suffer from some kind of severe mental illness. (Homelessness in America, 2022)

Hunger
-
Around 828 million people went hungry in 2021. This was 22% more from 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic played a huge role in the increase. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022.)
About 45% of children die from hunger in middle or low-class countries. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022.)
in 2020, 45 million children suffered from malnutrition. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022.)
In most countries, malnutrition affects 20% of people. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022)
Some of the countries that suffer from hunger are Yemen, Madagascar, and Haiti. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022)
The World Food Program predicts that by the year 2030, 670 million people will still suffer from hunger. (Extreme Poverty and Hunger: a vicious cycle, 2022)

Causes
Lack of jobs is also a cause of poverty. People who are looking to find work can fall into poverty because they don't have the essential needs. These include shelter, clothing, and basic hygiene. ( Unemployment Triggers Poverty, gender disparity, 2022)
Inequality is one cause of poverty, which as result, can leave people without the chance to use their voice and speak up to represent their community. (11 Top Causes of Global Poverty, 2020)
Conflict is another reason for poverty. Areas that are under attack, like Syria, are having buildings, roads, and communities destroyed are leaving the area with only the clothes on their back most of the time. (11 Top Causes of Global Poverty, 2020)
Those who don't receive the proper education can land in poverty, including in the poorest countries in the world. A few causes for the lack of education are not enough money for uniforms and books. (11 Top Causes of Global Poverty, 2020)
Climate change causes poverty by too much or not enough water. Multiple countries that are the poorest in the world rely on farming or hunting to survive. Malawi is a country where 80% is agrarian, meaning their food comes from crops and farmland. They usually only have enough food to make it through that season and nothing to fall back on. (11 Top Causes of Global Poverty, 2020)
Poverty and poor health care go together. In some countries where healthcare is not as strong, preventable and treatable illnesses can be deadly, especially in children. Some examples of these illnesses are Malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections. (11 Top Causes of Global Poverty, 2020)

Ways to address poverty
Even though the affordable care act was passed in 2010, there are still 12 states that refuse to expand Medicare programs. Over 2 million people are without an affordable health care option, so one way to fix poverty is to provide affordable health care. (The top 12 Solutions to cut poverty in the United States, 2021)
Another way to fix poverty is to provide good-paying jobs that fit a family's needs. Building the economy up requires good-paying jobs. Before Covid-19, the unemployment rate was 3.5%, but by April of 2020, it had gone up 15%. (The top 12 Solutions to cut poverty in the United States, 2021)
