They were local lords.
They hold more than five hides of land.

They were peasents who were free to work for any lord but not tied to any specific land.
Peasant Farmer
Most rented land and worked on it themselves for themselves and heir families.
They had to do a set amount of work for their local lord (Thegn).
Otheriwse the Thegn could take away their right to own their land.
Slave
They could be bought and sold.
Slave ownership was a normal part of Anglo-Saxon society.
King
Earl
They were the most important lords.
They were close to the kig.
