"once a tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous."
her father was once someone she looked up to and admired but now she is just embarrassed by him, this is what he once was. the metaphor represents how he changed in her eyes
its a volta! it ends all positive imagery with the first full stop of the poem, this is the definitive end of his old life
-
"and sometimes, she said, he must have wondered which has been the better way to die"
-
he died an emotional death that day, even if he didn't die in combat. he lost all of his family instead of them losing him
he was dead either way, literally or metaphorically

context :small_airplane:
-
-
a kamikaze pilot deliberately crashed a specially made plane into enemy warships in a suicide mission
if you surrendered from the mission and didn't kill yourself for your country then you would be shunned from your family and society as a whole
-
dying for your country was seen as a very respectable thing to do and people would do it as it meant that their family name would be forever respected and they would die with respect

structure and form
all seven stanzas have six lines which highlights how regimented the japanese military was and how stubborn/determined their views were
in japan, 7 is a lucky number and 6 is unlucky highlighting the juxtaposition between the social views of japan and the choices of the pilot
its written in free verse and is almost storylike, this could mirror the pilots feelings toward the mission and how he rejects the high expectations put on him (idk how i personally think this is silly)
lots of enjambment and absolutely no caesura in the fourth stanza to make the reader feel breathless
