Anti-infectives
PENICILLINS

Use: G+ cocci, syphilis, meningitis, endocarditis
Adverse: anaphylaxis, renal impairment, hyperkalemia (w high doses)
Contraindications: allergies to penicillin, cephalosporin, or kidney dysfunction
Education: take orally, with food
Interactions: lowers birth control effect, interacts with aminoglycosides
CEPHALOSPORINS
Action: Beta-lactam destroy bacteria by destroying cell wall
- Four generations, each is: more against G- and anaerobes – more resistant to lactamase
– more able to reach CSF
Use: broad spectrum for post-op infections, meningitis, pelvic infection
Adverse: anaphylaxis, bleeding, pain, cross allergy to penicillin
contraindications: allergies to penicillin, kidney dys., caution with anticoagulants

TETRACYCLINES

Use: acne, chlamydia, H. Pylori, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, UTI
Adverse: GI, tooth discolor, photosensitivity, hepatotoxic
Interactions: Milk/Ca2+, Iron/Magnesium supplements, laxatives/antacids

adverse: allergy, GI symptoms, superinfection

Monobactams
-
Use: MRSA, colitis caused by C. Diff
Adverse: ototoxicity, red man syndrome
Contraindications: caution w kidney dys., infuse over 60 mins, very low therapeutic index
