God knows the future and gifts us with His guidance
Conflict management
Lot took advantage of Abram's generosity and took the best of the land as his home
Yet God honored Abram's willingness to suffer loss when giving to Lot
Even Abraham armed his servants to rescue Lot and Sodom when they were taken captive
Conflict with Lot led to Abram seeking peace and letting Lot chose where he would live
Blessings
Make thee a great nation
I will bless thee
I will make thy name great
Ye shall be a blessing
I will bless those who bless you
I will curse you who curse you
In you all the families of the earth will be blessed
Faltering with God's promises
God promises a nation and the Messiah out of Abram
Sari was still barren though
Sarai tells Abram to marry her servant to bear children in her place
Hagar is now wife #2 and mocks Sarai for her barrenness and ignores her duties as a servant
Abram and Sarai learn the emotional stress polygamy creates
Dealing with family uncertainties
Abram heads to Egypt to avoid the famine
But thinking to protect Sarah and himself, he lies to pharaoh he's her brother
This distrust of Divine care it led to Sarah to great peril
God had to step in by creating a plague on pharaoh to save her
David reflects on this story saying in Psalms how God rebuked kings in protecting His anointed ones
pharaoh discovered Abraham wasn't telling the whole truth and a mission opportunity was lost
It is always safer to tell the truth
Neighbors
Abraham did not shut away his influence from his neighbors
Abraham's character and values impressed his neighbors about the God he worshipped
Abraham was always generous and welcoming to strangers
One such pair of strangers were angels who came to tell Abraham the good news of the promised child
