context
the negative aspects of dickens's childhood is mirrored through scrooge's own childhood with the purpose to show how his childhood shaped him and how without education he wouldn't have had such great career
Dickens grew up middle class till his dad came into financial difficulties and was put in a debtors prison and he worked at a blacking factory at 12 until 15 so he has experienced both sides of poverty
the "surplus population" is considered a link to Thomas Malthus's beliefs that overpopulation leads to po very which is an inevitability
five key moments
stave 1
he meets charity workers and voices his hatred for the poor and says they should die if they want to and "decrease the surplus population"
he meets Marley and "begins to quake" in his presence and he learns he has "laboured on it [his chain] since" hence he needs to change his ways
symbolism
symbolic of upper class people and their selfishness and stereotypical views of the poor and how they blame them for their own troubles

the ghost of christmas yet to come shows how little regard people have for him and Scrooge sees himself dead and says " I shall not leave this lesson"
he sees "tenderness" with death when he sees tiny tim's death and how deeply it impact the family and he vows to change

he "sobs" when he sees his younger self and says he "should like to have" given the caroller something this hows he is already altering his behaviour and repenting he also would like to "say a word or to" too Bob Cratchit which highlights his want to change and become better
he sees himself at school and with his sister fanny and he wishes he could have given a croller something he also sees Fezziwig and Belle then and in the future with her family

he sees people at the markes and he sees the cratchits and a family feasting,workers,Fred + family as well as ignorance and want which is introduced to him by the ghost of christmas present
he wants to "profit by" the lesson being taught to him and he is "overcome with penitence and grief" when he hears tiny tim might die
furthermore scrooge develops compassion which he highlights "he never felt before" this shows he can recognise how he has been changed so far by the spirits

Scrooge is contrasted with himself in stave one as he asks bob to replenish the coal which he didn't allow him to do before, the weather contrasts with weather in stave 1 as there is now "golden sunlight" which is metaphorical for how he has changed
