Social learning theory of gender
SLT
All behavior (including gender) is learned by observing others
Nurture shapes gender development
Significant others- parents, peers, teachers, media ( have an impact on your life)
Direct reinforcement
we learn gender development through direct reinforcement
Behaviors are more likely to be reinforced for behaviors that are gender appropriate (more likely to be rewarded)
For example boys who play football will be rewarded
More likely to be punished for gender inappropriate behavior e.g. playing with dolls
Direct reinforcement because its directed towards there child it has happened to ( child does a behavior and they are reinforced or punished for their own behavior
Differential reinforcement ( what happens with gender behavior)= encouraged to show distinct gender appropriate behavior
reinforced behaviours=repeated
punished behaviours= not repeated
through reinforcement children learn their gender identity
Indirect ( vicarious) reinforcement
Consequences of another persons behaviour
Rewarded= imitate behavior
Little girl hears mum being complimented for wearing make up and a pretty dress=girl will copy this wen she is able
Little boy sees classmate being called a 'sissy' for being feminine= learns not to copy this behavior
